The Children of Hurin

The first complete book from J. R. R. Tolkien since the posthumous
Silmarillion was published in 1977 was release Tuesday. After some 30
years of work by his son The Children of Hurin is out.

Taking place several thousand years before
The Lord of the Rings, yet referenced in song and verse in that tome,
it tell the story of the accursed Hurin, his son, Turin, and, to a
small yet significant extent, his daughter Nienor at the end of the
   First Age.

I encourage those that wish to know more about the world of
Middle-earth, but were but off by the difficulties of The
Silmarillion, to pick it up. Christopher Tolkien does a good job in
his introduction of giving you what information you'd need from that
book to enjoy this book properly.

   J. R. R. Tolkien believed The Silmarillion to be his most important
work. He believed it was the stage upon which The Lord of the Rings
was played out. The Children of Hurin builds upon this idea. Taken
together (or even separately) they cast The Lord of the Rings in the
   light their author intended.

The Lord of the Rings is the end of the story. Spend some time reading
   about how it all began.
