In Slate today, Bing and Owen West [1]describe a sustainable U.S.
military footprint for Iraq which would enable this country to
continue its efforts there for at least a decades. Often called the
"adviser model," this paradigm stresses the deployment of small teams
of U.S. troops to pair with Iraqi army and police units in order to
bolster their effectiveness. This model offers a way to radically
downsize the U.S. military presence while maintaining control of the
   country.
And also in Slate, I have a column [2]outlining the broad contours of
a withdrawal plan for Iraq. Although I'm optimistic about recent
developments there, I still think it is prudent for the military to
   plan our exit.
