What's British for "Conservative?"

Okay, so "liberal" means "free-market" or "conservative" in most
countries. But is [1]this really what "conservative" means in Britain?
THE Conservatives [sic] will propose banning plasma screens and
other energy-guzzling electrical goods in a report to be unveiled
next week.
And that's not even the weirdest part:
The group will also suggest scrapping Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
as a measure of the nationâs success in favour of a model that
measures peopleâs happiness drawn up up by Friends of the Earth.
Uh-huh. No word on whether they're also recommending the defence
budget be scrapped in favor of commissioning a fleet of Yellow
Submarines for purposes of spreading said happiness, but it seems
inevitable.
