Rub your eyes, pinch yourself, and question your sanity: it's a
[1]positive report on Iraq from the AP:
Today, commanders point to the sharp drop in Baghdad attacks â down
in August to a quarter of what they had been, according to the top
commander Gen. David Petraeus â as evidence of their effectiveness.
The tactical shift of having our troops provide security for Iraqis
(rather than trying to establish bases secure from Iraqis) seems to be
working better than expected. Those following the situation closely
will remember we were told it was likely that U.S. casualties would
increase considerably during this period, commensurate with the
increased tactical risks inherent in a more hands-on strategy.
Instead, it appears the focus on holding and building has generated
increased local sympathy for U.S. efforts, enhancing security for our
troops as well as for civilians.
And don't miss this great [2]post from Bruce McQuain on the reality on
the ground versus how the situation is being spun, with lots of
feedback from civilian Provincial Team Members in Iraq.
