Three Days Over Iran?

Well, [1]this is interesting:
THE Pentagon has drawn up plans for massive airstrikes against
1,200 targets in Iran, designed to annihilate the Iraniansâ
military capability in three days, according to a national security
expert.
Alexis Debat, director of terrorism and national security at the
Nixon Center, said last week that US military planners were not
preparing for âpinprick strikesâ against Iranâs nuclear facilities.
âTheyâre about taking out the entire Iranian military,â he said.
I suppose if you're going to hit them, might as well do it hard, fast
and thorough. But I'm skeptical it would help things overall, and I
very much doubt it will happen. This sounds more like the kind of plan
you have around just to let the bad guys know you can crush them if
you feel the need -- and, of course, in case they're nutty enough to
call your bluff.
The only scenario in which I can see this happening is a serious
escalation of interference in Iraq by Iran, resulting in many more
U.S. deaths, coupled with open nuclear defiance. At some point, Bush
may draw a line in the sand, dare Ahmadinejad to cross it, and
annihilate Iran's military if he does. I'd like to call that a boon
for Iranian revolutionaries, but the Iranian paramilitaries are
probably still too strong for anything but a mass uprising, and the
Iranian people may rally around their leadership if the country is
attacked.
The story notes some analysts are saying "stretched resources" would
prevent U.S. armed forces from effecting such a massive bombardment,
but those carrier groups in the Gulf aren't doing much.
And Scott Ott seems to have [2]scooped everyone on this story:
(2007-08-28) â Just hours after Iranian President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad said that his nation was ready to fill the coming power
vacuum in Iraq, U.S. President George Bush said he might âorder the
military to deploy one.â
âI know the Pentagon has developed a long-range strategic power
vacuum,â said Mr. Bush. âIâm not sure if Iran would fill it, but if
so, we could always replace the bag.â
