NPR Harry Truman Anecdote

I started writing about a Harry Truman anecdote I heard on NPR
yesterday, and then completely forgot about it by the time I got done
writing. Heh. So here it is:

On NPR, they had a story Thursday afternoon while I was driving home.
Can anyone confirm it? They said that there was a nationwide railway
strike during the Truman administration, crippling the nation's
critical shipping industry (airlines and interstate highways were only
a blip on the radar in those days). They said that Truman ordered the
Army to take over running the railways, and, publicly threatened to
draft all striking union members into the Army if they did not settle
and get back to work immediately. [1]This site backs the story up.

So. Isn't that little story interesting? You know with all the
shrieking about how the current administration is "shredding our civil
rights," it's just amazing what you find out previous administrations
have done that the ones doing all the shrieking today claim to
   admire...
