More on Autism

I've been absolutely riveted by a lot of the reading at the
much-criticized [1]Autism Network International. The [2]history of the
organization is particularly moving. And not in ways you might think.

It looks to me that it's the same old story of a research community
that turns into a bureaucracy hostile to any change in the status quo.
Fortunately for the autistics, they have a lot more power in their
hands than a lot of others do, although their needs clearly aren't
always being met by those who claim to speak in their names.

Why my sudden interest in the subject? Well someone very close to me
was recently diagnosed, and we're doing all we can to learn more about
it. And what we're hearing from adult autistics is not always quite in
line with what well-funded groups like [3]this one have to say. Not
that there's necessarily a war here, or that we're taking what anyone
tells us as gospel, but obviously there's a long road ahead for us and
   someone very special to us.
