Go Granny Go

I just watched a somewhat entertaining, somewhat depressing, and
rather moving documentary on HBO: [1]Run Granny Run.

Now in point of fact I don't believe in the idea anymore that we can
have citizen legislators. I also don't believe there's anything wrong
with accepting lobbyist money as long as the system is
transparent--and transparency, of course, is exactly what the horrible
McCain-Feingold campaign finance "reform" law destroyed.

So it's inspiring to watch someone like her struggling to make a
difference. But what she stands for, I mostly detest. Oh not
everything of course, but an awful lot of it. She helped get a law
passed that's the most greivous assault on the 1st amendment of my
   lifetime.

I was also amazed at the sheer naivetee and, to be honest, hypocrisy.
Having campaigned hard for campaign finance "reform," when her 2004
Senate campaign was short on cash she felt no compunction against
writing to very wealthy Americans to ask them to give her large
donations. Honey, that's what PACs are for: so citizens united with
special interests--which is protected first amendment activity--can
pool their money in support of candidates that agree with them on the
   issues.

Ah well. I felt sorry for her but I was quite glad she lost her
election bid. Yet I felt somewhat inspired by her example anyway. If
you have HBO, I recommend looking for it.
