Obligatory Spider-Man Review

Apparently I'm the only one who really liked this movie (well, me and
the people who made it the biggest opening ever). I saw it in IMAX,
which I highly recommend. As Dean points out, you do need to suspend
disbelief and ignore physics, but most comic-book movies are like
that. Also, I'm a big Sam Raimi fan from back in the Evil Dead days,
and the Bruce Campbell cameo was great.
My first impression was that it's just awe-inspiring that we can make
movies like this; nothing like Spider-Man 3 was even imaginable 20
years ago. I feel incredibly fortunate to live in a time where upwards
of $100 million is routinely spent to produce a few hours of
entertainment for me. Kings and queens should be so lucky.
What really surprised me, though, is how very Christian the movie was.
The entire movies centers around forgiveness, and in typical Raimi
fashion it's unsubtle (religious icons are ubiquitous, and at one
point we hear, derisively, "Want forgiveness? Get religion.").
Whatever you think of the plausibility of transubstantiation or
resurrection, in the practical sense the peculiar power of
Christianity is the doctrine of forgiveness, and this movie made me
feel a faint echo of what the first missionaries must have felt,
   spreading such a powerful meme.
