   Howard Fineman at Newsweek [1]tries to contain his glee at Dem plans
   to get right-wing talk radio legislated into silence, and seems a bit
   chagrined that more Democrats aren't more vocal in cheering on
   government repression of free speech.

     The Democratsâ more ambitious (and longer-range) goal is to
     reinstate the âFairness Doctrine.â
     ...
     A soon-to-be-released study, commissioned by groups allied with the
     Democrats, finds that conservative dominance of the radio airwaves
     is growing.
     According to researchers, more than 85 percent of talk-radio
     programming leans to the rightâat least by the researchersâ
     definition.

   OK, Howie. But why stop there? Let's have a Fairness Doctrine for
   network TV, public broadcasting, newspapers -- oh yes, and magazines,
   too. You know, all those "objective" areas for which decades of
   polling show a distinct leftward tilt. We'll force every reporter and
   editor who works on a story to disclose their political leanings, and
   have a legal requirement that half the stories be covered by someone
   from the other side of the spectrum. (Why are you screaming, Howie?
   Come on now, you don't need to hide under your desk like that.) Just
   think of all the fairness we'll have!
   After all, the really important thing is we have a level playing
   field, right?
