A Marathon, Or A Death March?

Susan Milligan as the Boston Globe [1]makes the same point I did
[2]recently: with so many large states likely to move their primaries
to Feb 5th, Super Tuesday may hold more than half the caucus votes,
essentially creating a very big one-shot national primary day. That
could prevent an underfunded dark horse candidate from building
momentum through early victories that keep the campaign cash coming.
If either party coalesces around a particular candidate or two this
year, it may be impossible for anyone else to compete; surprise
victories in Iowa and New Hanpshire aren't going to generate the tens
of millions needed to campaign in New York, Illinois, and California
(and remember, they may actually spend more in the primaries than in
the general election in these large states, because they're not
"battleground" states).
More evidence for our thesis [3]here, with the McCain camp apparently
panicking, and some staff quitting in despair and frustration. The
election may be a year off, but candidates like [4]John Kerry and[5]
Tom Vilsack have already dropped out. If you've been ignoring the
races because you think all this chatter about the election is silly
this early, by the time you tune in the candidacies might be all but
decided.
