The Carnival of the Liberated
http://www.deanesmay.com/posts/1173193576.shtml
Welcome to the Carnival of the Liberated, a sampler of some of the
best posts of the week from Iraqi and Afghan bloggers. This week we
have the FPS, OIL, the rape of Sabrine, and much, much more.
[1]Alive in Baghdad has a video report on the FPS, the Facility
Protection Service, a private Iraqi paramilitary security organization
which appears to be something between nightwatchmen and a militia of
its own.
[2]Roads to Iraq posts a video interview with Moqtada al-Sadr with
translation. In the interview al-Sadr claims that he's receiving
support from Sunnis.
[3]Iraqi Konfused Kid draws a connection between Saddam Hussein and
the Imam Hussein. [4]Five Rings critiques the Kid's exegesis of
Shi'ite doctrine.
[5]Iraq the Model has been posting updates on Operation Imposing Law
(unfortunate acronym). Just keep scrolling.
One of the reasons I didn't post a CotL last week is that all of the
new posts from Iraqi bloggers were about the rape (if there was one)
of Sabreen al-Janabi. I began to assemble a special focus post but
didn't have the heart to publish it. I've already linked to
Riverbend's take on the story so I won't link to it again. [6]Caesar
of Pentra is very upset about the incident. [7]Iraqi Lord seizes upon
the rape as a metaphor. [8]Iraqi Konfused Kid has a somewhat different
take: he's skeptical and makes a good case for his position. His post
is quite difficult to excerpt so read the whole thing. Here's small
snippet:
No, Sabreen's story is very fishy, her actions un-Iraqi, and her
story is clearly orchestrated for maximum effect, check out the
part where she says: 'I asked them why are chasing women? and he
replies: This is mut3a', in my subtitles, I overlooked this and
simply translated mut3a literally 'leisure', but the word has other
connotations: Mut'a marriage is a controversial Shiite-only
practice where a man and a woman have an Islamically-correct
marrige that only lasts for hours or days...
He also provides Sabreen's videotaped testimony with English
subtitles. Check it out.
Dave Schuler posts regularly to his own weblog, [9]The Glittering Eye.
The Carnival was originally conceived by Ryan Boots.
