   Ali earlier linked a story about the Grand Mufti of Egypt endorsing
   liberal democracy and an "authentic, contemporary, moderate and
   tolerant Islam," sparking a [1]telling discussion on his blog, with
   Ali being labelled an "enemy of Islam" by one critic.
   This is the critical debate happening in Islam that most in the West
   (especially those on the right) are generally blind to. We've lived in
   liberal democracies for a few generations now and so we've mostly
   forgotten there was a time, not that long ago, when Christians
   struggled with this same issue; Paine's Rights of Man was written
   partly as an argument against the divine right of kings being espoused
   by other intellectual figures of the time.
   Fortunately, more and more Muslims are recognizing the obviousness of
   the truth: liberal democracy is the path to prosperity, freedom, and
   happiness. Unfortunately, the Western press seems largely incapable of
   grasping how important changes like this are, and rarely gives them
   the attention they merit.
