Major Progress In Iraq

Iraqi politicians [1]took a very significant step toward resolving the
biggest sticking point in political reconciliation with the
   disaffected Sunni minority.

BAGHDAD - Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's Cabinet approved a draft
oil law sought by the U.S. to boost reconciliation between Iraq's
Sunnis and Shiites and the Iraqi parliament planned to debate the
     measure Wednesday.
     ...
     Twenty-four of the Cabinet's 37 members were present for the vote;
ministers from the Sunni Iraqi Accordance Front and the Shiite
Sadrist movement boycotted over separate political disputes with
     al-Maliki.
Still, despite the weakened coalition, the approval means
parliament is likely to pass the measure. Government spokesman Ali
al-Dabbagh said Cabinet approval came after amendments prompted by
the Accordance Front. He did not give details on the changes or the
     bill's final version.

It's worth remembering that the Iraqi parliament was originally
supposed to be on vacation this month, but recognized the seriousness
of the problem and decided to stay in session instead.
As Petraeus is wont to remind us, there must be a political
reconciliation to resolve the military conflict.
