The Carnival of the Liberated

Welcome to the Carnival of the Liberated, a sampler of some of the
best posts of the week from Iraqi and Afghan bloggers. This week we
have a cock-fighting, "the surge", a podcast featuring an Iraqi
blogger, the execution of Saddam, and much, much more.

[1]Afghan Lord posts a video of cock-fighting, a popular winter
   pastime in Afghanistan.

[2]Afghan Warrior presents a status report on Afghanistan:

Now life has been changed for most Afghans and they are enjoying
their lives compared to the hardline regime.

Afghans think that the U.S and coalition troops should be in
Afghanistan until our own army and police force are able to handle
security on their own. In my opinion the Afghan forces will need 3
more years to be able to handle security on their own. Recently the
wages of our armed force have been increased which is a good sign
and more young men will be encouraged to join the army.

[3]24 Steps to Liberty is enthusiastic about "the surge". [4]Baghdad
Connect reports on the preparations for the action in Baghdad.
[5]Roads to Iraq has a translation of the Ba'ath Party statement on
"the surge". [6]Hammorabi thinks that the reason for the security
problems in Iraq is that the U. S. is restraining the Iraqi army and
police forces. As best as I can tell that seems to be a minority view.
Mohammed of [7]Iraq the Model reports on the action and the reaction.
I found this reported exchange between Iraqi pols interesting:

Al-Inizi said "Iraq is not an American state and Bush must consult
with us before making such decisions about sending troopsâ¦" to
which al-Alusi responded by saying "We have an elected prime
minister and he was consultedâ¦you and others like yourself
wouldn't be sitting here had America not helped us. They are trying
to protect this democracy and they possess what they can offer to
help us with the security situation, but what do you have?? Cut the
nonsense, ok? Do you think the parliament wants to vote about this?
Fine, let's ask everybody if they want such votingâ¦"

[8]neurotic iraqi wife thinks "the surge" is long overdue and she's
all for it but doesn't think that's enough. BTW you can [9]hear
Neurotica in a SF Chronicle podcast here.

[10]Alive in Baghdad has a video of a priest's statement on the plight
of Christian Iraqis, who've been under attack there.

[11]Iraqi Konfused Kid posts a report on the state of Iraq as
   reflected in seven taxi rides.

I generally avoid linking to posts by Iraqi ex-pats in the CotL but I
thought you might be interested in this commentary on a "news report"
on Al-Baghdadiya (which broadcasts from Egypt) from [12]Eye Raki, an
   ex-pat living in London.

[13]Fayrouz's correspondent in Basra reports on the situation there.

If [14]this post from Iraqi Screen is to be believed the Mahdi Army is
   not a particularly savory lot.

[15]Dr. Hanoudi writes on the life and death of Saddam Hussein.
[16]Iraqi Roulette reflects on the execution.

There's a new Iraqi blogger whose focus is the Iraqi Blogosphere:
Semiramis of [17]Encyclopedia of Iraqi Blogs. Hat tip: [18]Healing
Iraq. I'm actually rather relieved that, in her review of blogs that
survey Iraqi blogs, she didn't mention CotL.

Dave Schuler posts regularly to his own weblog, [19]The Glittering
Eye. The Carnival was originally conceived by Ryan Boots.
