Alexandra Pelosi's Latest Film

I've seen two of Alexandra Pelosi's documentaries--her one about
George W. Bush, and her one about the 2004 Democratic Presidential
candidates--and enjoyed them. She's a very good and often captivating
film maker. And yes, she's House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's daughter. So
what? She's a good filmmaker.
I was a little sad for her when I heard the news about her latest
film, which is about evangelical Christianity. Not because of the
subject--having seen her earlier work, I know it would be a fair and
decent movie--but because tragedy struck just after she finished film
making, and now the film will be all about that in people's minds:
"I believe in the culture war,'' she said. "And you know what? If I
have to take a side in the culture war I'll take their side,''
meaning the Christian conservatives. "Because if you give me the
choice of Paris Hilton or Jesus, I'll take Jesus.''
Pelosi wrote, directed and produced "Friends of God,'' which took
her through 16 states and the District of Columbia with a small,
hand-held camera. It is offered as a series of snapshots, she said,
with a focus on conservative evangelicals, including the ministers
Jerry Falwell and Joel Osteen. In the film, [Rev. Ted] Haggard
explains the allure of evangelical Christianity and extols the
primacy of sex among evangelicals.
"I unfortunately chose the wrong leading man,'' Pelosi said of
Haggard, whom she picked for his credibility. She liked him, she
said, and they spent a great deal of time together.
Unfortunately, Haggard, who was a central player in much of the movie,
got busted in a prostitution and drug scandal just a few weeks after
the film was finished. He confessed, and lost his ministry. That's a
little sad, only because now she's stuck with a movie that everyone
will try to make about Haggard.
