     Think of the Muslim world as a lumbering passenger train, riding
     along only to collide after some time against another, bigger
     train. The conductors are the ones who keep us going, more
     concerned with keeping control than saving our lives. (And that is
     the truth: The leaders, as a result of their maddening policies,
     put their lives at risk as much as they put everyone elseâs.) On
     the train, meanwhile, most of the passengers have fallen asleep.
     Weâve been going this route for so long that no one can imagine
     anything different. To talk of abandoning a wagon would be to
     abandon what has been our home for centuries. Others, alert to the
     threat, respond with commendable haste. Their solution, however, is
     the less promising method of blowing themselves up. This panics the
     passengers and only causes the conductors to latch the door to
     their compartment all the tighter. Weâre still yawning towards
     disaster, but perhaps something can be said for spending the last
     few decades of our collective life watching our co-religionists go
     ka-boom.
