Christiane Amanpour, [1]reporter for the ages:

     âNatural allies,â this official said.
It was a surprising choice of words considering the barbs
Washington and Moscow have been trading of late.
âWe are not after conflict. We are not after crisis. We are not
after war,â said this official, who spoke on condition of
anonymity. âBut we donât know whether the same is true in the U.S.
or not. If the same is true on the U.S. side, the first step must
be to end this vicious cycle that can lead to dangerous action â
     war.â

This is a [2]perfect example of why reporters should do analysis now
and then, because what we learn about their perspective on events can
be rather startling, and give some insight into how they report.
Here, Christiane demonstrates a fundamental failure to grasp reality
and a somewhat disturbing inability to make a moral distinction, which
is particularly surprising since [3]her own family fled the Islamic
Revolution in 1979. We oppose Iran in principle because theyâre a
heinous regime that in addition to the being the worldâs foremost
sponsor of terrorism does horribly cruel and unjust things like
beating, torturing, and jailing womenâs rights advocates and
journalists, and hanging teenage girls for the crime of being
âunchaste.â We oppose Iran as a practical matter because in addition
to its recent historical acts of seizing our embassy, holding
Americans hostage, and [4]attacking shipping in the Persian Gulf, Iran
is currently fomenting civil war in Lebanon, pursuing nuclear weapons,
and sending IEDs to kill American troops in Iraq. But according to
Christiane, itâs just a matter of

which country will take the first step and show they're not being
weak by putting diplomacy back on track.

Sure, because Iran is perfectly willing to stop doing all that stuff
if we just talk to them, just like all the other repressive regimes in
history. And thus we can achieve [5]peace in our time, and then all go
home and get a nice quiet sleep.

     History awaits the answer.

History already has the answers, for those willing to heed its
   lessons.
