Interview With Dr. Faisal Devji: Author Of Landscapes Of Jihad
http://www.deanesmay.com/posts/1172113796.shtml
The number of people who study Islam, and claim to study Islam, has
expanded enormously over the past few years: On the whole, this is a
positive phenomenon. Other than the occasional quack, the general
interest is to be commended. But, of course, deep passions do not
translate into remarkable works and insights. In that regard, I have
long felt that Professor Faisal Devji, teaching at New School
University, is necessary, because his work is so unique. (His fall
2005 work, [1]Landscapes of the Jihad: Militancy, Morality, Modernity,
must be read.)
Educated at the University of Chicago, and holding faculty positions
at U Chicago and at Yale before coming to Manhattan, Devji represents
one of those few academics who presents truly original insights into
the phenomenon of Al-Qaeda, Islamism and the framework of
globalization, among other topics. Eteraz.org is interviewing him --
quite generously, he responded to our questions thoroughly and
quickly. It is only a pity we couldn't ask more questions.
Eteraz.Org (Question (1)) What errors do you believe are most common
to Western analyses of political Islam? Do you believe that
intellectual discourse in this country, and in the West most
generally, "gets" political Islam? [2]Devji's Answer:
