The Carnival of the Liberated

Welcome to the Carnival of the Liberated, a sampler of some of the
best posts of the week from Iraqi and Afghan bloggers. This week we
have Ashura, "the surge", the military action in Najaf, and much, much
   more.

[1]Afghan Lord post a video of Ashura in Kabul. Apparently, it's not
only in southern Iraq that it's commemorated this way.

[2]Afghan Warrior tells us a bit about himself.

[3]24 Steps to Liberty sets the record straight: Saddam didn't favor
one sect over another; he favored his friends.

[4]Baghdad Connect is skeptical about "the surge".

[5]Roads to Iraq says that 12 Americans were taken prisoner by Somali
Islamists following the raid in Somalia a while ago.

[6]Imad Khadduri posts at length on the action in Najaf last week. He
   has questions:

     - How can more than 300 'terrorists' assemble and remain hidden in
a field near Najaf for so long, and are then suddenly discovered
     and obliterated?

     - If they are claimed to be such well-trained militants, how come
the Iraqi police and military casualties are so low in comparison
     with near 260 dead 'terrorists'?

     - If they were indeed mere tribesmen marching that day in Ashoora,
did they not hang somebody last month for just a similar massacre
that occured in Dujail twenty years ago?

He believes that it will move more Arab Shi'ites to join the
insurgency. [7]Freedom of Mind is puzzled, too.

Mohammed of [8]Iraq the Model posts on the massive suicide bomb
detonated in a Baghdad market last weekend as a result of which more
than a hundred people were killed.

[9]Nabil has a first-hand report of the aftermath of a mortar attack.

Zappy of [10]Where Date Palms Grow has some figures which highlight
the realities of life in Iraq today.

Dave Schuler posts regularly to his own weblog, [11]The Glittering
Eye. The Carnival was originally conceived by Ryan Boots.
