   The girls in the pet store were all afraid of her. She was crazy wild
   and bit everybody. Isn't that hilarious? What a little sweetie.

   (Why yes, I am in love with my new pet. Why do you ask?)

   Not everyone should own a ferret. You have to be an "animal person"
   and you have to put some effort into understanding them on their terms
   not your terms. Please DO NOT buy a ferret just because you think
   they're cute or exotic. They are a HOBBY IN AND OF THEMSELVES. And by
   "hobby" I mean "something you put considerable personal effort into
   studying and understanding."

   If you buy a ferret on impulse you're doing yourself a disservice.
   More to the point, you're doing the animal a disservice. Even with the
   best intentions, you're probably going to wind up abusing the animal
   in a way it does not deserve. Please do not buy one of these critters
   unless you're willing to make not just a financial investment but a
   personal time and study investment.

   But they're very rewarding if you put the time in. This little girl
   scared everyone at the pet store. She was crazy wild and bit just
   about everybody who tried to pick her up. Yet within hours of Rosemary
   buying here, there she sat on my shoulder. She could have ripped my
   earlobe off or torn up my lips or cheeks--because they are very
   aggressive carnivores, and if you don't understand that about them
   then you're a fool. These are very aggressive carnivorous animals. If
   you're not ready for that, then you're not ready to have one as a pet.

   But Rosemary understood her immediately, and so did I. As a result she
   understood us immediately.

   Pets are not just entertainment. They're a commitment. More people
   should know and think about that. Especially when dealing with
   exotics.

   They are not human. That is lesson #1.
