Vile, Odious -- And Completely True

Aziz says:
...this fairly odious piece of conservative conventional wisdom....
that Democrats actively desire failure in Iraq. I know a fair
number of DWers here believe much the same thing, and it's vile.
Odious? Vile? Oh [1]really?
The war in Iraq "is lost" and a US troop surge is failing to bring
peace to the country, the leader of the Democratic majority in the
US Congress, Harry Reid, said Thursday.
Is [2]that so?
Many Democrats have anticipated that, at best, Petraeus and U.S.
ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker would present a mixed analysis of
the success of the current troop surge strategy, given continued
violence in Baghdad. But of late there have been signs that the
commander of U.S. forces might be preparing something more
generally positive. Clyburn said that would be "a real big problem
for us."
Now, that's vile.
Aziz argues that "this basic civility has been sacrificed on the altar
of immediate, short term political gain," but the reality is far
worse: Democrats have put partisan political gain above the good of
two nations. Not only that, but they have the astonishing gall to
scream "don't question our patriotism!" and claim any such criticism
is out of bounds whenever anyone dares to notice the obvious (the
irony of making these accusations while calling their own disgraceful
conduct "dissent" and claiming it's the highest form of patriotism
escapes them).
Now, it's certainly possible to overstate the Dems' commitment to
failure in Iraq. All else being equal, Democrats are Americans and
would generally like to see America do well. But, sadly, all else
isn't equal. By insisting that Iraq was a terrible mistake by
Republicans and betting on failure, Democrats have put themselves in
the political position that victory in Iraq is now a political
negative for the party. And so what's good for America is now bad for
the Democratic Party. But they have no one but themselves to blame for
the position they're now in, and whining about being criticized for it
shouldn't garner one iota of sympathy.
Oh, for the days when Dewey [3]declined to criticize Roosevelt's
conduct of the war for political gain.
