Before I became a blogger and got into all the other things I do these
days, I was an aspiring novelist. I've got several books sitting
around on my hard drive doing nothing but taking up space, so when I
heard about the [2]Gather First Chapter Romance Novel competition I
figured it wouldn't hurt to try.
Submissions started yesterday, and I'm kind of learning the unwritten
rules as I go along. The written rules are that the submission with
the most #10 ratings, in combination with the highest marks from a
panel of judges, wins a contract with Simon & Schuster. (Numbers other
than 10 don't count.)
The way I see it, the judges are deciding on the merit of the piece,
while the number of ratings shows the author's ability to promote
his/her work. I didn't realize that until yesterday, so unlike many
others in the contest, I have no group of connections that will
automatically go over and vote my first chapter a 10, just because
they know me.
I quit joining up with writer's groups several years ago, because
often they're more about talking about writing, but not actually doing
it, if you get my drift.
Now, I know it's early, because formal voting doesn't start until Aug
27, but I can see some of the entries getting comments and votes
already. (They say they'll delete the early ones and start over, but
who knows?) I'm also being sent to L.A. on TAD for two weeks, starting
on the 12th, and two days is not enough to start building a group of
connections, as they call it on Gather.
So I'd like to make an appeal to the group here to go over to Gather
and sign up as my connections. Of course, anybody else here wants to
enter, I'll be your connection and vote for you! Why not? I've always
been one to promote my friends. Hey, if I win, then you'll know
somebody in mainstream publishing ;>)
