1930s Popeyes

Via Instapundit, I see that [1]the original Popeye cartoons are
finally restored and available on DVD.
Popeye is one of the more difficult animation characters to talk to
animation fans about, because the vast majority of Popeye cartoons
most people have seen are not very good. This is due to a couple of
things: the tendency of extensive editing and chopping by television
syndication in the last few decades, and the fact that almost all the
really good ones were done in the 1930s by the Fleischer studios in
the 1930s. In the 1940s, under Paramount, some good but not great ones
were produced, and then after that almost anything made involving
Popeye was low-budget and quite low quality in terms of writing and
acting.
The original cartoons by the Fleischer Brothers however were
exceptional and are still usually eminently watchable and highly
funny. Alas, previous DVD and video releases have been low-quality and
often mercilessly chopped up and edited. The prospect of owning fully
restored originals in their entirety has me salivating. [sigh] Maybe
for Christmas...
