The Passion of Peter Duesberg (Act 3)
http://www.deanesmay.com/posts/1176758330.shtml
I have long been fascinated by the social uses and media ideo-class
wars that have been expressed via the medium of Peter Duesberg--the
twin towers of AIDS and Cancer; the light and the dark of it all, the
perfect double helix in which all I ever wanted to know about human
behavior is encoded.
I was privileged enough to get a front row seat at what was once the
back of the theater, and to see the Duesberg trilogy unfold, because I
was smart enough to listen when Harvey Bialy called to insist I read
his book and also grasp it. It took two readings. When I grasped it,
it was on the emotional plane--I understood it as a dramatist, more
than as a science knower. I understood the magnitude of it, and at
Bialy's urging, I pitched the story to Lewis Lapham's Harper's.
It wound up becoming one third of a much bigger story, but it was
always my secret favorite, and I share it here, now, with enthusiasm
and an imaginary champagne toast to Peter Duesberg, to those who stuck
by him to their own detriment if not destruction, and to all of us,
who are looking ahead to a world that might well get the upper hand
against the dragon of Cancer in our lifetimes.
