     In Saudi Arabia, Nancy Pelosi did a great thing. She asked the
     Saudi government about the lack of female politicians. The next
     step would be for American civil society groups to take the
     discussion further and find ways to support women's leadership in
     the Kingdom. Yet most liberals shy away from such an effort because
     they do not know whom to support.
     American liberals need a set of dissenters and reformers in the
     Muslim world who have a stamp of approval from our liberal leaders.
     It would be nice if there was a handy list.
     Usually liberals interested in seeing a free Muslim world are in a
     bind. Most of the dissenters are "Muslim" and not "Marxist" or
     "Secular." Their identity is Islam. Their world view is religious.
     Their social values often colored by Islam. They concede space for
     God and Book as opposed to rejecting them. Such concessions make us
     nervous because we distrust anyone who makes public appeals to
     religion.
     We begin rummaging for a "secular humanist." When we do not find
     such a dissenter we do nothing at all, which allows the right wing
     to go at it with guns.
