   Brian Tiemann, in the discussion Dean's cell phone post (chained
   below), makes a [1]great point about the annoying nature of ring
   tones. I have long meant to blog on this important and deep topic
   altogether separately.

   In an age when every cell phone has a vibrate setting, why does anyone
   over 12 use a ring tone ever? Much less a "cute" one? Why does anyone
   besides you have to know that you're getting a call? After all, if
   you're in a place where I can hear it -- the bus, the drug store, the
   restaurant, Third Avenue -- it's not as if the phone is going to be
   remote from your person at any time.

   Why?
