Disgusting Self-Indulgent Fat Slobbery

We all know it to be true: if you just eat less and exercise more, and
have more discipline, you won't be fat. Or if you are fat, if you'd
just get your sh*t together you'd stop being fat. It's a simple matter
of thermodynamics: eat fewer calories and expend more calories, and
   you won't be fat.

It's a goddamned lie. Women who suffer from obesity are treated
slightly more cruelly (mostly by other women) but it's a lie for both
   sexes.

   [EMBED]

The truth of the matter is that some people have metabolisms that are
a lot more efficient--i.e. more prone to get fat--than others. In
earlier generations, when people were poorer and food was not so
abundant, this was a pro-survival genetic inheritance: your metabolism
was slower, and more efficient, so you could survive better when food
was short. We now live in a time of abundance, when being hungry is
   not a normal, everyday occurrence.

Search as long and as hard as you want through [1]Medline or all the
peer-reviewed scientific literature, and you will find that there is
no evidence that fat people can become normalweight simply by eating
less and exercising more and being "more disciplined." Less than 1% of
the chronically obese can become--and stay--normalweight this way.
After decades of obesity research, no one can say they have a program
that lets fat people become non-fat just by eating less and exercising
more and being "more disciplined and less self-indulgent."

No program of eating less and exercising more has ever been shown to
be a cure for chronic obesity, and none has ever shown that overweight
people are by nature less disciplined or more self-indulgent than the
non-obese. Indeed, the average fat person tends to be more
self-conscious and more disciplined than the non-obese.

It's a metabolic issue, not a character issue.

At this point, a majority of Americans (who live every day without
worrying where their next meal is coming from) are overweight, and
about a third are obese. Conservatives like to claim this as proof of
our sloth and lack of discipline. Liberals like to blame the food
   companies.

How about this for a thought: we no longer live in a time when
scrabbling for food is a daily part of life. And some have metabolisms
that work better in that environment than others.

   Oh, such a radical thought.

By the way, I say again: right now, the majority of Americans are
overweight, and a third are medically obese. I guess we're just all
   slobs with character flaws, eh?

We fat people are taking over. Give us your pizza or we'll destroy
   you.
