Cocktail Party Theories: Pastrami
http://www.deanesmay.com/posts/1159160115.shtml
Some ideas are what I think of as "cocktail party theories." Which
means, ideas that I am not prepared to defend against all comers, but
seem to make for engaging discussions. Anyone who is taking them as
serious propositions is kind of missing the point: it's just an idea.
Still, recently I ate a great pastrami on rye bread sandwich from a
Jewish deli. And I noticed that the pastrami tasted a lot like pork.
Somewhere between bacon and pork chops actually.
Which led me to wonder: was [1]deli-grade pastrami originally an
effort by Jewish (or maybe Muslim?) butchers to cook and spice beef to
make it taste like pork? Because pastrami does taste of pork you know,
even though it has no pork in it.
What, am I nuts?
