Carnival of the Vanities, RIP

James Joyner notes that [1]The Carnival of the Vanities has finally
given up the ghost. Dean's World hosted the Carnival once, on [2]May
28 2003.
James thinks that the whole idea of blog carnivals is outdated. I
disagree. I left this in his comments:
I donât think carnivals are outmoded. I think a generic carnival like
COTV is outmoded. It was designed for a much tinier blogosphere, when
there just werenât all that many of us.
Many of the specialty carnivals continue to do quite well, and to be a
good way of bloggers gaining attention. Iâve picked a few that I link,
and they do well. Not that they do well because of me, but the point
is, they help people interested in certain specialtiesâlike medicine,
home schooling, business, etc.
The Carnival of the Vanities simply had no clear purpose anymore:
âAnyone who wants to can submit anything they want.â No point really.
It was like having a magazine called âMagazineâ that had random
articles every month. Charming for a bit, but ultimately futile.
Many of the various specialty carnivals still have good content, and
are an excellent way of relatively unknown bloggers getting exposure.
There's no reason to write off the whole concept. I'd prefer to
remember Carnival of the Vanities as a good idea that spawned many
useful spinoffs. It may have jumped the shark some time ago, but many
of its spinoffs have done and continue to do well.
