Joe Gandelman has [1]more on Steve Irwin's death, and makes the point
I was a bit too dense to think about: kids all over the world loved
this guy and learned a lot about respecting wildlife and conservation
from him. And that, truly, is a big loss.

I hope parents don't lie to their kids about how he died though. It's
important to remember that wildlife is dangerous. It's not about Bambi
and Thumper frolicking through the meadows. Wildlife is beautiful and
fascinating and amazing, but it isn't toys.

And yes, apparently, Irwin wasn't doing anything particularly
dangerous. Stingrays kill so rarely that there have been less than two
dozen such recorded fatalities in the last 100 years, and according to
reports he wasn't doing anything to taunt or mess with the 'ray. And
if it had stung him anywhere besides square in the chest it would have
been painful but nowhere near fatal. But these things can happen, and
that's a lesson worth remembering too.

So anyway I take back my earlier slighly ambivalent response. It
wasn't fair to him or those who loved him (of whom there were
   obviously many).
