Cultural Context
http://www.deanesmay.com/posts/1160329943.shtml
In the West, we have certain values and a certain way of thinking
about reality, which we tend to forget are not universal. Here's
[1]some interesting on-the-ground observations on Arab culture from
someone who spent a year there.
As I've said before, [2]context is everything. The author ends by
noting something we don't consider much: in some sense we are actively
destroying other cultures through assimilation, and while the process
is largely voluntary and generally quite beneficial to the "converted"
(and I'm not arguing against it) it does nonetheless create some
resentment -- especially among those who benefit from the status quo.
