In this elegant, fast paced, exciting history of the founding of
Americaâs Navy, [1]Ian Toll shows us the myths, legends, and men who
helped forge Americaâs original fleet. This story is of a fractious,
contentious lot. These officers and crew were only occasionally
gentlemen, only sometimes competent, but managed create the forces
which would maintain American independence for centuries.

Mr. Toll digs into the primary sources to give multiple accounts of
his subject. The cast is huge, involving presidents, captains, kings,
heroes and villains. He takes us from the halls of congress, to the
Shores of Tripoli. He presents facts which gave me clearer sense of
why America went to war with France and later England. If you didnât
know that France and America went to war in 1797, this book is well
worth reading. If you did, this book will provide an entertaining
   elucidation of first causes...

If there are any criticism to be leveled against Six Frigates, they
are minor. For instance: Toll didn't give prices in constant dollars.
This is a fast paced, enjoyable read. Highly Recommended!

Rating: 5 Ships of the Line out of 5 Ships of the Line! A magnificent
   book...
