The Carnival of the Liberated
http://www.deanesmay.com/posts/1163517539.shtml
The Carnival of the Liberated, a sampler of some of the best posts of
the week from Iraqi and Afghan bloggers, is back after a one week
hiatus for the U. S. elections. This week we'll focus mostly on
Saddam's verdict and Iraqi reaction to the American elections.
Afghan Bloggers
[1]Afghan Lord reports the banning of poppy cultivation in
Afghanistan.
[2]Afghan Warrior hails the Pakistani Air Force strike against Taliban
positions within Pakistan and calls for more activity against them by
Pakistan. It certainly won't be possible to stabilize Afghanistan
without that kind of support.
Iraqi bloggers on Saddam's verdict
[3]A Star From Mosul wasn't much interested in Saddam's verdict:
What are my reactions on the trial? NONE.. I didn't even watch it.
I didn't want to. It won't change a thing, not to the better at
least.
What's Saddam to me? Once a president who I hated.. Now a former
president who just "made" things work!!
[4]An Iraqi Tear is cynical about it:
It is clear now that Saddam trial was nothing but a political
âgameâ between Bushâs hand played whenever he needs the Americans
to sympathized with him; just like his game âthe war against
terrorismâ.
[5]Riverbend reacted bitterly:
Execute the dictator. Itâs that simple. When American troops are
being killed by the dozen, when the country you are occupying is
threatening to break up into smaller countries, when you have
militias and death squads roaming the streets and youâve put a
group of Mullahs in power- execute the dictator.
That's just her opening. There's lots more. [6]Iraqi Konfused Kid
posts an ironic send-up of the trial and sentencing. He concludes on a
more serious note:
Most of the Iraqis I've prodded felt oblivious to what could happen
to Saddam's neck, a Sunni cousin of mine by the name of Omar in
Ghazaliya said: 'To the hell', while another Sunni cousin of mine
in Egypt said: 'To the heck." I for one, felt happy, and
congratulated everyone I saw. While having justice done to the
tyrant would have been so much better if it were not for the sad
state of Iraq today, I only felt good today because this could
actually achieve good effects on the ground - I think that the
minute Saddam is executed many of the Baathists would stop and
reconsider what they are fighting for, the Iraqi Baath party always
will be a personality cult. Hell may break loose for the next
couple of days but remember, we are already in hell, so bring it
on.
chikitita of [7]first words, first walk, first...in Iraq posts a very
fine, unexcerptable post in reaction. Read it all. [8]Five Rings posts
what he calls a post of joy, not politics. [9]Iraqi Lord is not happy.
He says this is not a verdict of justice. [10]Hammorabi says it's a
step forward. [11]Iraq at a Glance is relieved. [12]Iraqi Screen got
the reactions of a number of ordinary Iraqis. [13]Iraqi Roses wonders
what's in the Saddam verdict for her? [14]neurotic iraqi wife was
disappointed by the verdict (she thought it was too lenient).
[15]Sooni wants to celebrate! Fatima of [16]Thoughts from Baghdad says
that a lot of people aren't celebrating. One of those would be
[17]Truth About Iraqis who has a lengthy jeremiad on the verdict as a
sign of Arab humiliation. On the other hand I can only conclude that
Zappy of [18]Where Date Palms Grow is happy about the verdict (click
on the link when you get to Zappy's post).
Iraqi bloggers on the American elections
Mohammed of [19]Iraq the Model posts an analysis of the American
elections from a Middle Eastern perspective. Abu Khaleel of [20]Iraqi
Letters is triumphant at the results of the U. S. elections, if only
to see Bush's discomfiture. Alaa of [21]The Mesopotamian, the finest
essayist of the Iraqi English language blogosphere, concludes his post
on the American elections like this:
Democrat or republican, America has no option but to find a way to
win this war. All real Americans must be as sure of that as all
real Iraqis.
Read the whole thing.
Dave Schuler posts regularly to his own weblog, [22]The Glittering
Eye. The Carnival was originally conceived by Ryan Boots.
