Adopting Open Standards
http://www.deanesmay.com/posts/1147410168.shtml
It's good to see more and more companies and government offices
embracing Open Source software, and open document standards. Anything
that chips away at Microsoft's monopoly on such things is good for
consumers and the IT world in general.
One way Microsoft has been able to keep their monopoly position on
Microsoft Office has been in refusing to allow their Office products
to directly support open document standards. [1]Too bad for them a
plugin has been developed that'll allow Microsoft Office users to work
with Open Office documents directly.
I assume that when the new version of Office is released, Microsoft
will play their usual tricks and do their best to sabotage that
plug-in. Anyone who thinks they wouldn't be that brazen just hasn't
been watching this company long enough (I've been watching them over
20 years now, and there's nothing they're too shameless to try--at
all).
