   Neo has a pretty good essay on [1]cruelty and animal experimentation,
   with the late Harry Harlow's experiments being the primary example of
   more questionable practices.

   Although I'll note that his later experiments, which were probably his
   most cruel, are not, I'm so certain, without value. Consider prison
   conditions for those sentenced to life in solitary confinement; in
   thinking about it, execution might actually be more kind, and Harlow's
   experiments point the way there.
