On The Moussaoui Ruling
http://www.deanesmay.com/posts/1146833947.shtml
The jury should have handed down the death penalty for Zacarias
Moussaoui, the Frenchman of Moroccan descent who was recently
convicted for his role in the September 11, 2001 attacks that killed
3,000 people. They went weak. Yet a life imprisonment sentence at
Supermax in Colorado - with no contact with the outside world for the
rest of his life - is far better than an acquittal. [1]However, no way
should the U.S. even entertain France's request that Moussaoui serve
out his sentence in France. In Europe, "life imprisonment" too often
means very early release after only a few years. France just can't be
trusted to crack down on criminals. Roman Polanski, anyone?
Aicha El Wafi, who is Moussaoui's mother, said that a a life sentence
for her son was more cruel than putting him to death. "Now he is going
to die in little doses," she said. "He is going to live like a rat in
a hole. What for? They are so cruel, they were wrong to want his head.
They should have gone all the way to the end if they were capable." I
agree that the jurors should have gone all the way with their verdict,
but I guess that being involved in killing 3,000 people ain't cruel in
El Wafi's book.
