   Not content to merely accuse our President of [2]rigging [3]elections
   like the brutal theocrats in Iran

     If so, they got their wish last summer, when Ahmadinejad used the
     same dirty techniques to get elected as had George W. Bush.

   he also calls Christopher Hitchens a drunk.

     Well, I don't think it is any secret that Hitchens has for some
     time had a very serious and debilitating drinking problem. He once
     showed up drunk to a talk I gave and heckled me. I can only imagine
     that he was deep in his cups when he wrote, or had some far
     Rightwing think tank write, his current piece of yellow journalism.
     I am sorry to witness the ruin of a once-fine journalistic mind.

   Classy. This guy is really a college professor?
   Plus, he manages to miss the point competely.

     Moreover, Iran cannot fight Israel. It would be defeated in 72
     hours, even if the US didn't come in, which it would (and rightly
     so if Israel were attacked).
     ...
     Americans are not fighting any more wars in the Middle East against
     toothless third rate powers. So sit down and shut up.

   Well, in the first place Iran has been fighting Israel for decades
   though their murderous Islamofascist [4]Hizbollah proxies; ask the
   families of dead Israelis and Lebanese how "toothless" they are.
   Secondly, the whole point of the current controversy is that while
   Iran currently can't "wipe Israel off the map" via a direct military
   confrontation with Israel, with a few nukes they most assuredly can.
   Yes, Israel could retaliate in kind, but this is a regime [5]in love
   with suicide bombings, and may regard the noble death of a few million
   of its people (whom they currently repress pretty brutally anyway) in
   the service of destroying Israel as a holy, glorious sacrifice rather
   than an unthinkable horror.
   Kind of scary that Cole's not only the MSM's go-to "Mideast expert,"
   he's also on the short list for Yale. Well, at least the Taliban
   spokesman will presumably enjoy his classes.
   Iowahawk has [6]the original draft of Cole's screed.
   I'm a bit disappointed, I was encouraged by Cole's very admirable call
   to subsidize supplying Mideast libraries and stores with classic texts
   that explain basic Western principles of individual rights and
   democracy. Now he appears to have lost it completely.
