Amusing Monday Editorials

According to the Guardian, [1]William Buckley is a neocon. Who knew? I
can just picture him waking up this morning, looking in the mirror,
and shrieking upon noticing his transformation.
The column is pretty typical of antiwar pieces of late: start from the
assumption Iraq was better off under Hussein, ignore the consequences
to the world of leaving him in power to pursue WMD after the imminent
collapse of the corrupted sanctions regime, and throw lots of lurid
adjectives, accusations, and ad hominems around.
Yes, democracy and freedom has been chaotic and violent thus far, as
Iraq suffers through the hangover of decades of horrible
state-sponsored abuse. Their mistake is assuming there was a better
alternative, and missing the fact that the measure of freedom Iraqis
enjoy now is far better than the none they had before. Suicide bombers
in a U.S.-occupied capital may make more headlines than 30,000 Iraqis
quietly murdered by a fascist police state with no free press to
report it (and the West's free press selling their souls to Hussein
for access), but that doesn't change the fact fewer people are dying,
not more, and more importantly the killers are no longer running the
   country.
But I could be wrong, as the cost of the war has in some cases
apparently been far higher than reported. According to WaPo, because
of the war, [2]there have been no trees in Iraq for three years.

And when it dawned on her that three years had passed since she'd
last heard the sounds of leaves rustling on a tree, she began to
     weep.

Damn you George Bush! What did the trees ever do to you?! [shakes
   fist]
