Favorite Quick Snacks
http://www.deanesmay.com/posts/1141698760.shtml
One of my favorite snacks is to take a cheap can of mixed fruit in
juice--not in syrup, but just in natural fruit juice--and stick it in
the freezer for a half hour to 45 minutes (depending on how cold your
freezer is and how warm the can is). If you get it just right, about
half the juices are frozen and about half are still liquid. Open the
can right out of the freezer, scoop it out into a bowl, and eat it
immediately. (Or, if you're in "bachelor mode," just eat it out of the
can.)
If you get it just right, there are ice crystals throughout the juice,
but the fruit is still all basically fruity. There may be some ice
crystals in the fruit, but it's mostly still the consistency of fruit.
It's all just very cold and with just a delightful bit of crunchiness.
But all of it very cold.
I actually like this better than ice cream or sherbert.
I understand some people turn their noses up at the whole idea of
canned fruit, but this particular concoction is quite nice, and can't
really be accomplished with fresh or frozen fruit unless you want to
put a lot of work into it. The canned fruit in the juice is just great
this way, and ridiculously easy. A one dollar can of the stuff will
serve 2-3 people as an after-dinner dessert, or, one person can eat
the whole thing if it's a snack all by itself. Even if you eat the
entire can yourself, it's only about a 200 calorie treat.
Try it some time and let me know if you like it. Also, I'd like to
hear about it if you have other ideas like this, i.e. very cheap, very
simple, and surprisingly delicious. Got any similar suggestions?
