Should We Celebrate Zarqawi's Death?

I once worked in Japan with a guy who taught English in post-Ceausescu
Romania. He told me that the grandmother of one of his students used
to watch a particular videotape whenever she wanted to relax. The
student said his grandmother nothing would relax her more, no pill,
nightcap or piece of music, than the video of the former dictator
Nicolai Ceausescu and his wife standing before a firing squad and
   being gunned down.

Seeing the video of Zarqawi's death, I begin to understand how that
old Romanian woman felt. I hope to soon see a similar video of Osama
Bin Laden's one-way trip to Paradise.

Father Jonathan, writing [1]here for Fox News, says that he can't
rejoice at the death of Musab al Zarqawi:

I can rejoice today because a man's evil acts have come to a halt.
I can applaud military men for stopping an aggressor. I can even
celebrate justice. But I can never allow myself to gloat in the
     destruction of another human being.

Unlike the good padre, I can and believe we should rejoice - if not
   "gloat".

Calling al Zarqawi a human being is an insult to those of us who have
created life instead of taken it. As I mention in [2]this essay, I
believe that some human beings are born lacking a soul and
consequently act no better than mindless automatons bent on fulfilling
their own needs. He was a rapist while still in his teens, and
tortured as well as killed using methods that would gag de Sade. Had
he done to kittens and puppies what he did to Nick Berg, Jack
Armstrong, Shosei Koda and Ken Bigley the furor over his actions would
have been greater amongst certain segments of the population.

Zarqawi was a psychopath catapulted to fame and power through the
politics of the region. Had he been born in the USA, I have no doubt
that he would have achieved the same notoriety as Jeffrey Daumer, John
Wayne Gacy and Richard Ramirez. While the terms "rejoice", "gloat" and
"celebrate" may be too strong, I believe that we should at least take
satisfaction knowing that one monster has been removed from this world
   - and perhaps be pleased knowing that his death [3]was not as quick as
   first assumed.
