Best Discussion

I have moved "In Defense of Gay Marriage" into the [1]Best Discussions
archive. Not because Dave's article was so wonderful per se (Dave is a
total badass ninja and all, but it wasn't necessarily one of his
best), nor as some sort of slap at Armando (although Armondo has been
very silly recently), but because the level of discourse in the thread
   was, as [2]

Dave likes to say, "Empricism is a harsh mistress." I hate him for
that, but only because I wish I'd said it first. I'm afraid I'll have
to kill him for that. I hope he knows it's nothing personal (I'll try
   to make it painless, dude).

I have one brag about Dean's World, and it is this: If you read an
article, no matter how stupid, and then at the bottom you see, "10
Comments," and you click on that comments link, you'll find 10
comments worth reading. Well, 7 out of 10 anyway, with some humor and
fluff in between. But you will usually find meat there. Why? Because
we don't play. We don't treat commenters as "also rans," as a sort of
contemptuous, "oh, look at these losers who happened to want to
comment." No, commeners are a vital part of the entire experience.

We also put very little stock in "rah rah" comments. As in, "Yeah Dean
you're right! You go Aziz! Mary you're awesome! You tell 'em Ron! Go
Scott, go! Whooh Dave and Dave!" There's a little of that, which is
fine, but it's never the core.

In my four and a half years of blogging, the greatest compliment I
ever recieved came from [3]Tyrone Steels, who said of Dean's World:
"if you come, you'd best come correct." Which I think is [4]ebonics
for, "If you make an assertion, you'd better be ready to back it up
with some hard-as-diamond facts and logic, or you won't like the
   result."

Not because we're sadistic, or always right. But we've got a scalpel
and we've got a microscope, and we want to know: what exactly are you
saying, and what are the exact inferences you want us to draw? Cuz we
don't play. Come correct, or don't come at all.

Which is why our "best discussions" are always worth reading. Or so
   we'd like to think.
