Gay Marriage Amendment Goes Down Tubes--Again

   To the surprise of no one who's really been paying attention the last
   couple of years, the [1]Federal Marriage Amendment died in the Senate
   again.

   Once again, it could not even muster a 51 vote majority, let alone the
   67 needed for ratification. (And it would need over 290 House votes
   too, which it would also never get in a million years.)

   Most people in the U.S., including a number of conservatives, are just
   not hostile enough to gay people to ratify something so strong and
   irrevocable. Most people recognize, I think, that sexuality that
   deviates from the mean is not some sort of "slippery slope into
   depravity." Still most people don't like to use the word "marriage" to
   define same-sex couples but that doesn't mean they want to forever
   deny them the simple decency and protections that such covenants would
   bring.
