I was talking with a friend of mine the other night and he was rather
astounded that I now consider Google just another faceless, soulless,
amoral corporation. He wondered what they'd done to make me feel that
way and asked if it was just China. I said no, China was part of my
last straw--being willing to today to China's oppressive government,
but refusing to help the U.S. government trace terrorists and child
molestors, was definitely my breaking point with this company. Their
high-handed way of dealing with their AdSense partners, their lack of
any meaningful tech support or willingness to answer questions, and
the fact that they brag about their lavish employee benefits without
being willing to reveal their exact revenue figures to investors, all
add up to a company that's not to be trusted.
I also learned recently that they've been censoring conservative news
sites from their Google News product. And, apparently they can make a
special notice on their front page of every major holiday except
Memorial Day. (I wouldn't know about that since I stopped using them
months ago, but I've read about it.)
"Don't be evil" my butt. They're just another amoral big corporation
that exists for nothign except to make money, just like all the rest.
Professor Reynolds has a [1]detailed look at Google's downfall. My
prediction is that their stock prices will plummet and they'll be
bought up some time soon. They've squandered too many people's good
will, and too many other search engines are just as good now.
Microsoft's [2]Windows Live used to be weak but now when I compare it
to Google I can barely find a difference. Ditto Amazon's [3]A9.com
product. And Yahoo's just as good now too.
And if I really feel like using Google, I can just use [4]Scroogle,
and deprive Google of any revenues from my using them.
A company like Google lives and dies by its reputation, because it's
frankly got nothing else anymore. And its reputation is rapidly
starting to smell.
I look for an Enron-style meltdown in the next few years.
