The Carnival of the Liberated

Welcome to the Carnival of the Liberated, a sampler of some of the
best posts of the week from Iraqi and Afghani bloggers. This week
we've got the Iraqi media and terrorism, the conflict between Israel
   and Hezbollah, and much more.

Both [1]Afghan Lord and [2]Afghan Warrior have posted about two
districts of Helmand province in Afghanistan coming under the control
of the Taliban and the flag of the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Pakistani group
Lashkar-e-Tayeba replacing the Afghan flag there.

Abu Khaleel of [3]A Glimpse of Iraq bids farewell to his children,
who've left Iraq for other, safer places. This piece from Mama of
[4]Emotions... about the murder of a family friend provides a good
companion piece. They share a common theme: leaving.

On [5]his other blog Abu Khaleel has a lengthy analysis of the
situation in Lebanon. Somehow I think his prescription is not going to
   work out.

Najma of [6]A Star from Mosul asks for some help on behalf of an Iraqi
researcher. She wants some Americans to answer a short questionnaire.

[7]Baghdad Connect, right now the hottest thing in the Iraqi
blogosphere, posts the headlines and some eyewitness reports.

Ladybird of [8]Roads to Iraq posts a lengthy examination of the murder
of Rafik Harriri in Lebanon last year (which touched off the Syrian
withdrawal). The conclusion: it was the Americans, the Israelis, and
anti-Syrian Lebanese. Anybody but the Syrians.

Hammorabi has posted repeatedly this week about the Israel-Hezbollah
hostilities and I suspect that his views are probably the prevailing
ones in most of the Middle East, if anything more temperate. [9]This
post is typical. I was going to quote it in full but here's the first
   paragraph or so:

The ongoing barbaric attacks on the Lebanese civilians by the
Israeli war machine has been confirmed by the UN envoy apart from
the pictures shown by the media which only represent little part of
     the size of destruction.

The destruction in Lebanon by the Israeli war machine included
civilian compounds, houses, flats, schools, hospitals, medical
centers, roads, civil services centers, mosques, water plants,
power stations and others. The situation in Lebanon is a
humanitarian disaster by all means. This is how it was described by
     the UN envoy.

Hundred of thousands of families rendered homeless, thousands fled
their destroyed homes and for safety, hundreds of children were
killed, and all by all Lebanon infrastructures destroyed near
     fully.

   Read the whole thing.

[10]Ibn Al-Rafidain continues his interesting and insightful reactions
to a memo leaked rom the U. S. embassy in Baghdad.

It's getting so I honestly don't know whether [11]posts like this one
from Omar of Iraq the Model on the increasing marginalization of
violent resistance groups in Iraq represent a realistic evaluation of
the situation or wishful thinking. My understanding is that the
unquestioned increasing violence in Iraq is not uncharacteristic of
insurgencies right up until the end. It's hard for me to reconcile
"increasing marginalization" with "bringing them into the political
   process", however.

Salam Pax posted a [12]link to his video report for Newsnight on
   staying alive in Baghdad.

[13]The Exiled Shalash posts on the importance of the Iraqi Interior
   Ministry.

[14]Iraqi Roulette posts the touching story of an old man, Abu S., and
   his love.

[15]Treasure of Baghdad reflects on the ongoing violence in Iraq:
   sectarian strife or civil war?

I honestly, really, genuinely appreciate these pictures from Sunshine
of [16]Days of My Life's garden, presumably in Mosul. [17]More here.
   Thank you, Sunshine.

Dave Schuler posts regularly to his own weblog, [18]The Glittering
Eye. The Carnival was originally conceived by Ryan Boots.
