   As an addendum to Dean's "doomed" piece below, I can't help but
   mention the entertainingly paranoid-intellectual rantings of one
   self-titled Gaius Marius, author of the apocalyptically titled
   "[1]Decline And Fall of Western Civilization" blog.
   It's quite a piece of writing. The author, wielding an impressive
   vocabulary, spurns even the most basic grade-school understanding of
   Constitutional law, regularly making assertions such as "with no real
   obstacle domestic remaining to absolute presidential authority, the
   united states can be called nothing except a tyranny." His prose is a
   bit more interesting and substantive than "Bush=Hitler!" even if it
   really amounts to little more than that in the end. There's a sort of
   stark, raving beauty there, a fascinating car wreck of verbiage one
   cannot look away from, a vividly dark, complex tapestry in some ways
   reminiscent of Egdar Allan Poe, in that one simultaneously wishes the
   author would find a prescription for lithium and antidpressants and
   hopes, for the sake of the art produced, that he does not.
   But perhaps there's a method to his madness. Peppered with lurid
   phrases like the "growing dark power of unchecked ambition" and
   "national and civilizational decay" Gaius' writing is intent on
   selling the reader on a vision of a decadent, collapsing, doomed
   society. And why might he wish to do so? Well, here's a hint: the
   author manages a hedge fund investing in... yes, you guessed it, gold.
