   Virginia Postrel notes a surprisingly lucid comment on economic
   doomsayers [1]from Adam Smith's 1776 economics text, The Wealth of
   Nations.
   
   Brilliant quote. It should be required reading. I have been hearing
   literally since I was old enough to understand that there was a world
   beyond my family that things are bad and getting worse, and that our
   economic system and/or civilization itself would surely collapse
   within 10 years.
   
   I turn 40 next week, and I've been hearing it non-stop for as long as
   I can remember.
   
   It keeps, er, not happening.
   
   Indeed, by almost anything you can actually measure, most things today
   are better than they ever have been, and most are getting better all
   the time. For an in-depth look at this, I can't recommend much better

   Worse. It's definitely an eye-opener.

   Oh, and by the way, can I also mention that throughout every single
   Presidency of my lifetime, I've heard that the President (whoever he
   is) is shredding the Constitution and destroying this great country?
   Just thought I'd mention that, too.
