   Until we can find technologies that require a small fraction of what
   they require now, solar power can never be a major contributor to
   America's power needs. It just can't. There's not enough energy there,
   unless you set up orbiting solar collectors that beam down power to
   collection stations on Earth.

   Even if solar collection technology was 100% efficient (which is
   impossible), there wouldn't be enough there to be more than marginally
   useful.

   And the environmental cost of trying to do it would be enormously
   destructive by the way. Much more environmentally harmful than nuclear
   power as it happens.
