Superman was in the 1930s by two Jewish immigrant kids, one American
and one Canadian. He first appeared in comics in 1938, and was such a
sensation that by 1940 Hollywood wanted to put him up on the silver
   screen.

The first studio to get to work with the character was the Fleischer
studios, famed for creating the original Betty Boop and Popeye
   cartoons.

The studio pulled out all the stops and spent a fabulous amount of
money producing the first Superman cartoons. The produced over a dozen
in all. Alas, the studio did not make their money back on these
cartoons, which subsequently led to their closing their doors.
Nevertheless the cartoons they made were spectacular, among the best
cartoons ever made. Here's the first of the series:

It's fun to contemplate that these were put out even beefore America
entered World War II, although some of the later episodes had strong
war themes, with Nazi and Japanese Empire villains. But the first few
cartoons were about just plain old baddy villains.

By the way, a note for Dave: "...and the American way" wasn't added
   until the 1950s. ;-)
