Being a Gay Republican

Michael has thoughts [1]here, with responses to critics [2]here and
[3]here.
One of the things I've always said is that it is a mistake for any
interest group to allow itself to be tied to one political party in
America. In a two-party system such as ours, that means your fortunes
will rise and fall with the fortunes of that party. That's not smart.
If you look at the most influential interest groups in America--and by
the way, there's nothing wrong with interest groups, that's what
democracy is all about--the most influential groups are those with
strong ties to both political parties. Yes, they may have a little
more in one party than the other, but the less tied to one party a
group is, the less hated and controversial they are, and the more
likely they are to advance their agenda with a minimum of fuss.
